Typical approaches to therapeutic interventions at Maythorn

  • Strength-based methods

    • Exploring information on internal and external skills, resources, strengths, and assets that can be activated and utilized to address challenges, manage issues and promote growth and understanding.

  • Arts-based methods

    • Using visual arts and craft-based activities to explore and express difficult feelings or experiences in a safe environment, to promote mindfulness and focus, and to offer a pathway for clients to independently self-soothe and explore their inner world outside of sessions.

  • Narrative methods

    • Using storytelling tools and techniques to explore questions of identity, character arcs and inciting events, to recognize patterns and opportunities, and to promote a deeper understanding of the self and others.

  • Psycho-education

    • Providing information on how “standard” and divergent brain development can impact multiple aspects of functioning including focus, anxiety & depression, social and relationship development, trauma, stress & fear response, and many others.

  • Cognitive-Behavioural methods

    • Identifying and challenging faulty thought patterns, examining cognitive belief sets for evidence and providing counter-examples, and developing an understanding of how thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours are connected.

  • Trauma-informed methods

    • Providing psycho-education on how daily and long-term functioning in multiple areas of life can be impacted by past or ongoing traumatic experiences, and offering a safe, sensitive space for processing these events.

  • Mindfulness

    • Promoting a focus on the present moment, activating deep breathing and sensory and environmental cues to mitigate stress & anxiety responses, and learning how our physiological cycles can impact our mental and emotional states.
